Merchants tried to file a class action lawsuit against the two credit card companies as well as three other banks for allegedly fixing transaction fees in violation of antitrust law. In San Francisco, a U.S. District Judge ruled the facts didn't support the merchants' claims that Visa and MasterCard set the fees that merchants pay to banks for processing credit card transactions. The lawsuit has been dismissed. (Jul-26-05)
