Baton Rouge, LA: (Jul-19-07) A class action lawsuit was brought against Verizon Wireless, alleging that the company faxed unsolicited advertisements for its products to Louisiana, Florida, and Alabama businesses. The suit, brought by Accounting Outsourcing of Baton Rouge, claimed that this suit is one of about a dozen class action lawsuits in Baton Rouge federal court alleging companies broke federal and state bans on unsolicited faxed advertisements. At issue is the decade-old Telephone Consumer Protection Act, a federal law that prohibits advertisers from sending junk faxes unless the sender has prior permission. It imposes fines of up to $1,500 per violation. In a settlement reached, the cellular telephone company has agreed to a $6 million settlement to resolve the class action. Lawyers who brought the case are seeking another $2.3 million in fees.
