Shareholders filed a class action lawsuit against the owners of Stop and Shop and Giant supermarket chains regarding a 2003 accounting scandal. The former top manager resigned after the company made the fraud known and its shares dropped by two thirds overnight. The proposed settlement requires approval from a court in the Baltimore district and from holders of at least 180 million shares. Compensation would be up to $1.30 per share totaling $1.1 billion.
