In December 2005 the Province of Alberta was sued alleging the system unfairly provided social assistance to Albertans receiving Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH), welfare and widows' pensions. The class action lawsuit claimed the way the province dealt with over payments and under payments of benefits was "illegal, inequitable, harsh and oppressive." $1.7 million has been paid out by the province so far to 415 claims out of 2,662 claims filed so far. Albertans have until January 2007 to file a claim. (Jul-22-06)
