Approximately 19,000 people were forced to get hepatitis A vaccines after having been exposed to tainted produce at a Loblaws store in 2002. An employee in the produce section of the Humbercrest Market store in Toronto was diagnosed with Hepatitis A, causing a massive health scare that left shoppers concerned for their health. Consumers filed a class action lawsuit against the giant supermarket. A settlement reached with Loblaws will allow anyone who took precautionary measures by getting immunized or consulting a doctor eligible for restitution, to $150. Those individuals infected will receive a sum greater than $150. A mediation process will determine exact amounts to be compensated. (Jun-16-06)
