The American Civil Liberties Union filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of eleven Black and Latino motorists alleging racial profiling by patrol officers along Arizona highways. The lawsuit claimed law enforcement officials engaged in a continuing pattern and practice of race-based traffic stops, detentions and searches of non-white motorists throughout Arizona. According to the class action settlement, the Department of Public Safety agreed to collect and analyze statistical data relating to traffic stops and vehicle searches statewide. As well, a citizens' advisory board will be created to review the department's practices and policies relating to racial profiling. (Aug-03-06)
