The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a class action lawsuit against the establishment on behalf of twelve former employees of the Plaza Hotel in New York. The dozen Muslims claimed they were subjected to hostile work environment as well as severe and pervasive harassment. The lawsuit alleged the Fairmont violated civil rights through religious discrimination. Under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, it is illegal to discriminate against an employee on grounds of race, religion, sex, color, age or national origin and the hotel has agreed to a $525,000 class action settlement.
