The California man held an essay contest to give away his ocean view house. The person who paid a $195 entry fee and wrote the best essay on why he or she wanted to live in Manhattan Beach would win the house. Waldrep collected hundreds of thousands of dollars from contest entrants, but then decided to sell his home for $1.2 million. The contestants filed a class action lawsuit against Waldrep alleging fraud. A Superior Court Judge ordered Waldrep to repay $1.8 million in entry fees and interest to the contestants. (Mar-30-06)
