Baltimore County, MD: (May-09-08) A class action lawsuit was brought against Baltimore County and its school system, by over 1,000 Baltimore County homeless students and their parents. The suit accused the Baltimore County school system of failing to help out with school enrollment and transportation for homeless students. Charges were filed by families, who were staying in homeless shelters at the time and then contacted the Public Justice Center in downtown Baltimore for help. In a recent announcement, officials declared that the two sides have reached a settlement agreement, bringing the two-year lawsuit against the county school system to an end.
Under the terms of settlement, Baltimore County must do more to identify and enroll homeless students in schools as well as work to provide transportation, meals and other critical school services. The deal mandated that the county inform them of their right to appeal. County sources stated that the homeless school settlement is being issued as Baltimore County recorded a rise in its homeless student population, which is currently about 1,300. Apart from the numbers, Baltimore County also reviewed its definition of homeless students. [
