Albany, NJ: A former inmate tried to file a $5.5 million class action lawsuit claiming poor living conditions at the Albany County Correctional Facility violated minimum standards of living. Former inmate Brian Brodhead represented himself and sought to include 14 other inmates in the case. Brodhead claimed jail officials ignored repeated complaints of insect infestations. A lack of air conditioning spurred the growth of mold, mildew, and fungus that soured clothes and linens, causing many inmates to develop rashes. US District Judge Lawrence Kahn denied the motion to file the complaint as a class. (Jan-02-07)
