Santa Clara, CA: A $20 settlement has been reached in a Canadian class action lawsuit pending against Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, a powerful painkiller that contains oxycodone, and is similar to morphine.
The lawsuit alleged that the powerful drug was over-marketed and prescribed while simulataneously the addictiveness of the drug was underreported.
The national lawsuit was filed in 2007, and in reaching the settlement, Purdue admits no liability. The settlement totals $20 million with $2 million allocated to provincial health providers.
According to a lawyer for the Canadian plaintiffs, people were typically prescribed OxyContin by a family physician for short-term injuries such as a sprained ankle. Lawyers represent as many as 2,000 Canadians who became addicted to the drug.
The settlement requires final court approval.

Been prescribed Oxycontin for 23+yrs now, and the only pain meds that truly work, and am terrified about what to do for long term pain management patients, going through the slow physical and mental torture, brought forth through the mandatory Opioid Reduction act, which is move obvious move against abuse, and i do understand, but a truly unjust sentence against long term pain management patients, for whom the meds were originally created, yet are not at fault for their ongoing conditions!

I am the guardian of a 12 year old child who has been estranged from his mother and sisters since the age of three. His sisters are also in the care of a guardian except for the infant that passed away while the adults were shooting up oxy. See they acquired immunity to the pills and the doctor kept prescribing more. I would like to see children who have been affected by this poison in such a way that they lose their homes, schools, families, parents, and budding identities gain a college fund from the big pharma corps. Oxy ruins lives of those who have never even used the stuff. If street dealers are responsible for another's overdose because they sold laced drugs, BPC's are responsible for their parts in the opioid crisis.
