Williamson County has been accused in a class action lawsuit of denying indigent defendants facing criminal misdemeanor charges their right to a court-appointed attorney. The lawsuit alleges the county and judges who preside over three county courts-at-law failed to inform defendants of their right to a court-appointed attorney. Instead, the courts discouraged them and delayed appointment of an attorney. It also alleges that defendants were encouraged to give up their right to legal counsel and to speak with prosecutors without an attorney.
