King County Public Health has issued a warning to women in the state of Washington regarding a problem with the generic version of the Depo Provera shots given at ten Seattle-King County Public Health clinics. Two women have become pregnant after receiving the shot meant to prevent pregnancies. The women received birth control shots between October 2006 and the first two weeks of January, 2007.
The Seattle-King County Health Department uses the generic version of Depo Provera, an injectable progesterone, medroxyprogesterone. It is a hormone injection that lasts for three months to prevent pregnancy. The injection contains synthetic progesterone and no estrogen. It requires a clinic appointment every three months and is 98% effective as birth control.
