A lawsuit alleges that Vertrue, a Connecticut based marketing company that pushes a proliferation of buying club memberships through negative option transactions, has engaged in consumer fraud. The lawsuit claims that Vertrue failed to meet the requirements of its sales practices to that of Iowa law, particularly the Buying Club Memberships Law. Consumers received unexpected and unnoticed charges when they were offered 'free trial offers'. If the customer accepted the offer but failed to cancel membership at the end of the trial period, the consumer's credit card was charged.
