A class action lawsuit has been filed against Illinois Department of Public Aid on behalf of 700,000 low-income people in Illinois who are eligible for assistance with their utility bills through the $147 million federal/state Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. The suit was filed in order to speed up the process of providing eligible people with help, and it alleges that under federal law reconnections funded by LIHEAP must take place within 48 hours after a household applies for help, or 18 hours in life-threatening situations.
