U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

A lawsuit seeking class action status has been filed on behalf of a group of residents in 30-year-old Third East Hills Park subsidized co-op against the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The tenants at the co-op hope to halt the foreclosure sale of their housing plan for redevelopment. They are asking that HUD stop the sale of the property, specifically that HUD be permanently enjoined from foreclosing on the property; stopped from displacing any other residents; and be forced to help manage the property. HUD allegedly wants to sell the property to the Urban Redevelopment Authority for $1, which in turn wants to sell it for a nominal fee to companies that plan to turn it into mixed-income housing. The residents have so far won a temporary restraining order.
