U-Haul Truck/Trailer Rentals

U-Haul advertises throughout the United States on trucks, in Yellow Pages advertisements and otherwise the rental of various size trucks for $19.95/$29.95/$39.95 "plus mileage for In-Town rentals(picking up and returning to the same location).

Customers, based upon these advertisements, assume that the quoted prices referred to a 24-hour period. When making a reservation, customers are asked: "About how long will you be needing your truck?" One customer then estimated that she would need it for a morning, about 6 hours.

She picked up his $19.95 truck at about 7:00 AM and did not rerturn it until about 2:00 PM, about 7 hours. When she returned the truck, she was told that her credit card would be CHARGED FOR TWO RENTAL PERIODS, or $39.90 plus mileage, even though she had the truck out for less than 24 hours. SHE WAS ALSO CHARGED $20 FOR COLLISION DAMAGE WAIVER (CDW), which she did not request.

This customer is now the plaintiff in a class action against U-Haul, which has been certified By the Hon. Mark I. Bernstein. The present Class consists of renters from U-Haul whose rentals of trucks and trailers occurred in Pennsylvania. We are seeking for this client and all the members of the Class a recovery of her over-payments plus interest.

Based upon the information we have obtained, it is our opinion that the same or better claims exist throughout the country against U-Haul. In addition, in California, there is a "private attorney general" law that may be used to pursue claims against U-Haul for the overcharges made to renters as well as to purchasers of CDW, SAVEMOVE and/or SAFETOW, the latter two being insurance "products" that U-Haul sells.

If you have information about the above-described practices of U-Haul in Pennsylvania or any other state, please fill in the form at right.
