A class action has been filed against the Columbia Rural Electric Association and Asplundh Tree Expert Company, claiming an August school fire in Columbia and Garfield counties caused property damage and losses. Between August 5 and 17, the fire burned 52,000 acres of timber and grassland along with 109 residences, and 106 outbuildings. 27,000 acres in the Umatilla National Forest, 12,000 acres owned by the state Department of Natural Resources, and 13,000 acres of private and county land were burned. The suit claims the fire was caused when a dead tree collapsed in calm weather onto an electrical line. The case was filed in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Washington.
