A lawsuit seeking class action status was filed in King County, WA, earlier this week, which alleges that 19 cities in the state are overcharging motorists who get tickets via red light cameras.
The suit stems from a law passed in 2005, which the complaint states specifies that traffic-camera fines shall not exceed the amount of the fine issued for other parking infractions within the jurisdiction. The plaintiffs contend that the intent of the law was primarily one of safety, not revenue.
The cities named as defendents in the lawsuit are: Auburn; Bonney Lake; Bremerton; Federal Way; Fife; Issaquah; Lacey; Lake Forest Park; Lakewood; Lynnwood; Monroe; Moses Lake; Puyallup; Renton; SeaTac; Seattle; Spokane; and Tacoma.
