Class action status is being sought in a discrimination lawsuit filed against the Manhattan based Local 28 of the Sheet Metal Workers International Association. This suit, the most recent in several discrimination suits that have been filed against the union, was filed on behalf of as many as 1,000 former and current non-white workers. The suit seeks a motion to force the union to comply with a court order banning discriminatory practices, as well as up to $100 million dollars in back pay.
