Los Angeles Housing Authority

A class action lawsuit has been filed against the city agency for allegedly breaking the law after raising the rent for more than 20,000 poor residents. In 2004, the Housing Authority reduced Section 8 rent subsidies by about $121 per month per family. The lawsuit claims the city was required to give tenants a one year notice before decreasing the subsidy, but failed to do so or make any meaningful attempt to comply with the law. The lawsuit affects about 23,000 of the about 100,000 tenants in the Section 8 program and alleges many families may have been evicted or become homeless because they could not make the higher payments.
