A lawsuit was filed on behalf a high school student who was accepted to the Dow Jones Newspaper Foundation-Virginia Commonwealth University summer journalism workshop, only to be informed shortly thereafter that she could not attend because she was white. The class action lawsuit, filed on behalf of all non-minority students who might have otherwise qualified to attend programs across the country, seeks a ruling that race exclusive programs such as this violate the 14th Amendment's prohibition of differential treatment based solely on race or ethnic background. The defendants are Virginia Commonwealth University, Media General Inc., Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, and eight individuals.
