A class action lawsuit has been filed against the three manufacturers alleging air and groundwater contamination is linked to cancer. Two lawsuits filed in state and federal court claim that three chemical companies, Rohm and Haas, Morton International and Modine Manufacturing, spilled enormous quantities of highly toxic chemicals that contaminated the air, soil and groundwater. The chemical plants, based in Philadelphia, manufacture plastics, adhesives and sealants.
The lawsuit claims that brain cancers found in local residents were caused by toxic contamination of air and groundwater. Two of the chemicals, vinyl chloride and trichloroethene, are known carcinogens and have been linked to brain cancer. A second class action has also been filed demanding medical monitoring costs for nearly 6,000 employees of the Spring House research facility to screen employees for brain cancer.
