Perchlorate is a recognized group of toxins called endocrine disrupters; they can modify hormonal balances and hinder human development and reproduction. Throughout the United States, perchlorate has been found in local drinking wells at concentrations that may cause the spread of serious diseases. Fireworks, explosives, and industry dumping are suspected in cases of high toxicity.
The Environmental Protection Agency suggests perchlorate is dangerous at levels above one part per billion. There are a significant number of perchlorate plumes that range between 4 and 100 ppb. Unfortunately, the price of a national clean up would cost several billion dollars and take hundreds of years. From lab studies, the EPA discovered perchlorate can affect the thyroid and cause permanent neurological damage. There is also strong evidence of danger to infants. One study found babies born to mothers exposed to trace amounts of perchlorate in drinking water had lower thyroid hormone levels at birth.
