Sharp Memorial Hospital's pancreas transplant program is the subject of an investigation for a possible class action lawsuit for adding and waitlisting patients in their pancreas transplant program even though they have not done a pancreas transplant in over a year. Sharp Memorial Hospital has been placed on probation by United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) for the deficiencies in their pancreas transplant program.
Patients who were on the pancreas transplant waitlist were not informed by the hospital that the program was basically inactive for the majority of 2005 and 2006. Two patients who were awaiting pancreas transplants at Sharp Memorial Hospital died in 2005 and 2006. It has been suggested by UNOS that Sharp Memorial make their Pancreas Transplant Program inactive until such time as the hospital can sort out the problems with the program. Sharp Memorial Hospital refused to comply and UNOS was forced to put the hospital on probation in order to protect patients.
All transplant programs at Sharp Memorial Hospital will remain on probation until the hospital can show UNOS that the problems with the Pancreas Transplant Program have been resolved. This ruling is designed to ensure that there is a legitimate chance for patients to have a transplant.
