A $58 billion class action lawsuit claims the three major oil companies are responsible for a huge oil spill on the Brooklyn-Queens line and have stalled in their government directed cleanup that began in 1990. The suit claims that the lives and property of residents are threatened due to underground contamination from the spill which led to toxins in the water supply. All three oil companies have been under New York state's Department of Environmental Conservation consent decrees to clean up the mess.
