A class action lawsuit has been filed against Occidental Chemical's Muscle Shoals plant alleging resident's property was damaged by the release of harmful substances. The suit was filed in Colbert County Circuit Court on behalf of residents with homes in the River Road, Wilson Dam Road, and Second Street area. The class action claims the plant produces a variety of chemicals including chlorine, potassium hydroxide, potassium carbonate, potassium bicarbonate, and hydrogen gas. The suit claims Occidental Chemical had two known groundwater contaminant plumes that exceeded the maximum contaminant level, discharged mercury through its wastewater and disposed mercury into storage facilities and waste piles, and housekeeping and maintenance practices that contributed to the release of contaminants.
