A class action lawsuit has been filed against Abbott Laboratories, the manufacturer of Norvir, a critical anti-AIDS drug. The suit was filed by the Prescription Access Litigation (PAL) Project, which is a coalition of 93 consumer organizations in 35 states, and alleges that the company's more than 400% increase in the price of Norvir is an illegal and unfair practice that violates the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act.
"Abbott is exploiting individuals with HIV and AIDS by quadrupling the price of a life-saving drug for which no alternative exists," said PAL Director Alex Sugerman-Brozan. "There must be some limit to what companies can charge gravely-ill patients for life-saving medications."
