A class action suit filed by the Collegiate Athletic Coalition (CAC), with the help of the United Steel Workers, is seeking to get money from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to pay for expenses such as travel and food. The suit also requests the NCAA be prohibited from telling member colleges that they cannot offer athletic scholarships up to the full cost of attendance. The suit involves approximately 20,000 student athletes from 144 football and basketball schools since 2002. Most student athletes have had a cap on what they can earn from a job and athletes are the only students who are restricted in aid by universities. Furthermore, the NCAA makes millions of dollars annually and does not pay its players, many of whom come from low-income backgrounds.
