Dodge, Chrysler Minivan Fires

DaimlerChrysler is recalling 681,000 minivans to replace the upper cooler hose on the power steering units of minivans with V6 engines. The 2002 to 2004 Dodge and Chrysler minivans made prior to August 2003 are the vehicles in question.

DaimlerChrysler says the hose could become damaged, causing a fluid leak that could result in an under the hood fire.

Twenty-three "incidents" have been reported so far, with no injuries.

The company is offering to replace the upper power steering hose at no charge to customers.

My husband was driving home from picking his kids up when he noticed smoke coming from the back of the van. When he slowed down the smoke started coming through the vents and from the engine area. He pulled over, popped the hood and could see flames coming from the engine. He got the kids out and called 911 but by the time the FD got there the engine was totally engulfed in flames. Everything is melted from the dash forward. The engine is almost unrecognizeable. Thank God that no one was hurt and that he noticed the smoke as soon as he did.
