A lawsuit has been filed and is seeking class action status against the city housing authority for allegedly allowing toxic mold to grow unchecked in homes at the Linden Family Development. The lawsuit was filed in Malden District Court and claims the Malden Housing Authority has failed to properly maintain the development, which has resulted in the growth of at least five different types of toxic molds in resident's homes.
The suit was filed on behalf of more that 700 residents who live in the Linden housing project on Coleman Street. The 220 low-income rental units were developed as part of a state program established in 1950. The suit alleges the toxic mold has caused a wide range of illnesses from which residents suffer, including asthma, rashes, hair loss and emphysema.
