Match Day
Class action status is being sought in a lawsuit filed against Match Day, a company which matches medical students with the teaching hospitals where they do their residencies, on behalf of the students. The suit alleges that the company is exploiting students and violating anti-trust laws. According to an attorney of the plaintiffs, Match Day "is part and parcel of a scheme by hospitals to keep residents' salaries artificially depressed." The suit claims that the system allows the residents no opportunity to negotiate salary or working conditions, as they have no other option for where to complete their residency. Also named in the suit are Northwestern and Rush University Medical Center, as well as other teaching hospitals.
