Genentech's new drug for an age-related disease that causes blindness has been linked to an elevated risk of stroke. The company's own large scale study of the eye drug, Lucentis, confirmed tentative findings from earlier clinical trials showing that the medication can increase the rate of strokes. Genentech has sent a letter alerting eye doctors to the risk of stroke from its macular degeneration treating drug. An interim analysis of a large 5,000 patient trial shows that 1.2% of patients given a 0.5 milligram dose of the drug suffered a stroke, compared with 0.3% of patients given a 0.3 milligram dose.
