Former employees have filed a lawsuit and are seeking class action status against the company for allegedly failing to maintain health care benefits for retirees as required by law. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court in Camden and if certified would represent 235,000 Lucent retirees and dependents. In 1998, Lucent was required to maintain all retirement benefits at their previous levels through September 2003. However, retirees claim Lucent raised co-payments, deductibles, and retiree contributions for coverage between Jan. 1, 2001 and Jan. 1, 2003.
