Just after the United Food and Commercial Workers union formed a local unit, members went on strike for three weeks. Nearly 18 months later, a class action lawsuit was filed. The Alberta-wide class action seeks compensation for workers who were allegedly wrongfully fired between April 2004 and April 2006 for bringing up human rights violations. There were in excess of 50 individuals at the meat packing plant who were terminated wrongfully because of health or safety concerns that they were raising. The claim also alleges the company harassed workers, did not investigate claims of harassment, and failed to provide a safe working environment.
