A class action lawsuit has been filed against Jersey Central Power & Light on behalf of approximately 250,000 JCP&L residential, commercial and industrial customers who were affected by power outages in July 1999. Rolling blackouts were imposed from July 3 to 8, 1999 due to the outages, which were caused by record-setting heat, unprecedented electrical demand and a failure of two transformers at GPU Energy's Red Bank substation. The suit alleges negligence and breach of contract by JCP&L, and seeks to recover damages, which were estimated to be about $56 million dollars. This suit was filed on behalf of approximately 250,000 Jersey Central Power & Light who suffered damages due to the July 1999 power outages.
