A class action lawsuit has been approved against the nickel company alleging contaminants from one of the plants decreased the value of properties. Port Colborne residents were concerned about the long term release of pollutants and filed a $750 million class action lawsuit. Two lower courts had previously dismissed the case. From 1918 to 1984 Inco spewed approximately 20,000 tones of nickel into the small Ontario community. High levels of contaminants can be found surrounding the refinery and locals blame Inco for the devaluation of their homes.
