A class action lawsuit has been filed against Montreal-based Imperial Tobacco on behalf of Canadian smokers. The suit alleges that the company deceived its consumers in marketing its light and mild cigarettes as a more healthful alternative to regular cigarettes. The suit claims that the company violated the Newfoundland's Trade Practices Act, a statute enacted in the 1970s as part of pro-consumer reforms, and seeks to the refund of money made from the sales of light and mild cigarettes since their introduction in the 1970s.
