Hewlett Packard has been accused of selling ink cartridges with a "Smart Chip" that prematurely registers the cartridge is empty or expired, even though there remains ink in the cartridge.
Some consumers are seeking damages stemming from this practice, including restitution for that portion of the ink cartridge that has been rendered unusable.
The smart chips are used in consumer printers HP DeskJet 812C, 804C and 842C, and commercial printers 2000C and 2500C.
