Current and former employees have filed a lawsuit and are seeking class action status against the grocery store chain for allegedly violating civil rights laws by segregating women into lower paying jobs and failing to promote them to management positions. The lawsuit claims Gristede's made violations of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the New York State Human Rights Law, and the New York City Human Rights Law. The suit claims Gristede's steers female job applicants into cashier and bookkeeper positions, while steering male applicants into clerk positions which provide more opportunities for extra hours, full-time work, and promotion to management.
