Detroit, MI: General Motors has announced a voluntary recall of more than 10,000 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans due to defects in a fueling pipe. It has also recalled Chevrolet Impala police cruisers.
Although the vans were sold in 50 states and Canada, the vehicles are only being recalled in northern US states and almost 1,000 vans in Canada, where salt and chemicals are used to de-ice roads, which in turn is causing corrosion in the fueling pipes.
GM said salt and chemicals can get trapped in a conduit that covers the fuel filler pipe and cause corrosion. Gasoline may leak and cause a fire but to date no fires or injuries have been reported from the problem.
The recall affects the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans from the 2003 and 2004 model years with left-side cargo doors. GM said it will fix the problem at their expense and GM dealers will be notified in October when parts become available, but owners have already been sent letters detailing the problem.
The recall affects the following states only: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
Meanwhile, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced that GM is also recalling more than 36,000 Chevrolet Impala police cruisers in the US and 1,700 vehicles in Canada, due to a defect in the vehicle manufacturing that allows for a fracture in the lower front control arms. The fracture could lead to loss of control and serious accidents if the vehicle is driven at high speed.
