Each year approximately 200 children under the age of five are severely burned and 25 burn to death as a result of exploding gas cans or fire from the gasoline. Additionally, between 2,000 and 6,000 children under six are poisoned by gasoline each year.
Gas can manufacturers are not obligated under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act to put child-resistant caps, spill-proof spouts or flame arresters on their cans. The Consumer Products Safety Commission feels there is an "urgent need" for child-resistant gas cans. The Commission reported that many young children are injured while spilling gasoline on tricycles or toy lawn mowers in an attempt to "refuel" them.
It costs the manufacturers pennies to install a child-resistant cap, yet many manufacturers do nothing to prevent children from burning themselves.
