Detroit, MI: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling 709,837 sport-utility vehicles sold in North America due to a potential braking defect stemming from an earlier recall three years ago.
The recall involves model years 2011 through 2014 Dodge Durango’s and 2011 through 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured from January 5, 2010 to September 8, 2013.
About 646,394 vehicles were sold in the US, with the remainder in Canada and Mexico, the company said. According to Fiat Chrysler, nearly 95 percent of the SUVs in the US were serviced as part of the earlier recall, which may have involved improperly installed brake-booster shields used to prevent corrosion that could degrade braking functionality. That repair would therefore, place owners at risk for impaired breaking.
Since the initial recall in May 2014, Fiat Chrysler states they have received nearly a dozen consumer complaints indicating the vehicles have weakened braking ability since the brake booster shield was installed to prevent water intrusion.
