EQ Resource Recovery blended liquid waste solvents to create fuel used to fire industrial operations such as cement kilns. On August 9, 2005 an accidental combination of hazardous liquid wastes caused a storage tank to explode and then set off a chain reaction of fires in 29 surrounding tanks and a building containing 400 55-gallon drums of flammable liquids. Debris continued to smolder at the site for four days. A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency report concluded smoke from the fire posed an immediate health risk because it contained harmful chemical compounds. Thousands of residents from Romulus and Wayne were evacuated and have since filed a lawsuit seeking class action status against the plant. The lawsuit claims smoke and ashes from the fire damaged property, decreased property value and may have long term health side effects.
