eHarmony

A lawsuit has been filed and is seeking class action status against the popular online dating service for sexual orientation bias. The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court and claims eHarmony refuses to offer its services to gays, lesbians, and bisexuals.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of all gays and lesbians who have been denied access to the online service and claims eHarmony violates anti-gay and discrimination laws under California law.

eHarmony was founded in 2000 by evangelical Christian Dr. Neil Clark Warren and had strong early ties with the influential religious conservative group Focus on the Family. It has more than 12 million registered users, and heavy television advertising has made it one of the nation's biggest Internet dating sites.

When I went to the eHarnony website I went through the personality test and was told I was inelegible to join because of my choices. I went back and tried again as a straight woman and I was instantly granted access, however I didnt need it because I am gay. I feel that I was discriminated against because of my sexual orientation. I already see enough discrimination and if all I want to do is find a mate I wasnt expecting to get that slap in the face.

After seeing ads stating that eHarmony was doing free personality profiles and hearing about the matching methods unique to eHarmony, I decided to try the site out. I was dismayed that I couldn't get beyond the third question as I was not either a "man seeking a woman" or a "woman seeking a man." I was even denied the free personality profile. This caused me distress especially when the two friends I had at that point were using the same sites I was using like match.com and true.com and not getting dates from those sites; however, they were also members of eHarmony and were going out on dates with men they met on eHarmony. I was shut out from their discussions because I was not able to be a member of eHarmony and I was not going out on dates. This caused me to feel depressed, socially isolated, and like I didn''t have the same rights to pursue happiness as my straight friends.
