A certified class action lawsuit has been filed against the radio broadcaster for allegedly illegally using its market dominance to inflate concert ticket prices. The lawsuit was granted class action status in US District Court in Los Angeles. It claims Clear Channel used its control of the radio airwaves to limit competition from rival concert promoters by not playing music by artists that did not use Clear Channel as a promoter.
The class action claims Clear Channel used its market dominance in anticompetitive activities that unfairly increased ticket prices for consumers, coerced artists to use Clear Channel for concert promotion, and illegally inflated ticket prices to live rock concerts across the country. The suit alleges that because of Clear Channel's abundantly monopolistic practices, the company controlled the content of the radio airwaves and prohibited an artist's music from being played on the air if they opted to use a promoter other than Clear Channel.
