A class action lawsuit has been filed against the cemetery on behalf of people who have been unable to bury family members since May 16, 2007. The Fabrique de la Paroisse Notre Dame de Montreal, which owns and manages the cemetery, locked out 129 unionized employees in response to their pressure tactics. Since the lock out, there have been no burials, cremations, or landscaping at the 139-hectare site on Mount Royal's southern side.
The suit alleges the cemetery ignored its contractual obligations with clients and families to bury or cremate their relatives. Over the past 51 days, 325 people have progressively passed away and are currently being refrigerated until burial or cremation is possible.
