Class action status is being sought in a lawsuit filed against Cargill Inc. on behalf of current and former black employees. The suit alleges that black employees were passed over for promotions, or not informed about opportunities to advance. The company settled a similar suit in 1985, paying $1.2 million dollars and promising to establish procedures to hire and promote more black candidates. The current suit alleges that ever since the court order from the 1985 suit expired four years ago, the company has reverted to its old ways, and that things have actually been worse for black employees.
