A class action lawsuit has been filed against Briad Restaurant Group LLC, the New Jersey company that holds the T.G.I. Friday's franchise in Connecticut, on behalf of wait staff who were paid less than minimum wage. The suit alleges that the although state law allows a restaurant to pay wait staff 29% less than minimum wage on the assumption that tips compensate for the reduced hourly wage, the plaintiffs were also paid less than minimum wage for tasks where they did not receive tips. According to the law, the regular minimum wage rate is supposed to be paid for duties outside of those associated with waiting on customers.
