A lawsuit has been filed on behalf of 18 former editorial employees against the paper alleging age discrimination. In 2004, 65 employees were terminated, only to be replaced by younger journalists. The case was filed in US District Court in Dallas and alleges The Dallas Morning News had become a hostile environment for employees over 40, stereotyping them as unable to adapt to new technology or assume multiple job responsibilities. The age discrimination lawsuit claims Belo violated the federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act and former workers are seeking back and future wages, benefits, and civil penalties.
